NEW YEAR’S EVE
The day started (as usual) nice and warm! Whilst I was still in bed, Ray was having his breakfast and suddenly saw the strange writing in the sky Oi Oi which means hello hello. It’s actually advertising a mobile phone company – but looks very good in the sky.
It is traditional in Brazil to great the New Year at midnight by going down to the beach, watching a firework display and, at the stroke of midnight, tossing a white flower into the sea and making a wish. There are 3 spectacular displays around the bay: the famous one at Copacabana where up to 2 million people collect, a superb display at Gloria, and on our side of the bay, a fantastic display at Icarai. The one big advantage of being at Icarai is that you can see all three displays at once! We tried to capture someone of the spectacle in pictures.
In the first week of the new year, we have been recovering from the excitement by occasional visits to various beaches

What a fantastic time you are having - all this lovely sunshine is brilliant for you at this time of year. The apartment looks great - a quiet haven for you both.
Not jealous, of course, as I sit here with the usual winter cold and cough in 3 degrees C after snow last week! All the photos are great. Glad you enjoyed Christmas with Paula's family and we wish you lots of good health and lots of luck - and happy travelling in 2008.
Love and best wishes,
A & K
I have this concern that the pair of you will lose contact with reality.
Education Officer to Head of School:
"I have your letter about the increase in School fees. Will this take effect next September?"
HoS: "I do not have my letter to hand. What does it say?"
EO:"It says from April 2008."
HoS: "Then I expect April is the date it will take effect."
EO: "How much will the fees increase to?"
HoS: ""I do not have my letter to hand. What does it say?"
EO: "It says £21,000 per annum."
HoS: "Then I expect £21,000 is what the fees will increase to."
EO: "Thank you for your help."
Same day. Different Education Officer.
EO2: "I'm afraid I will not be able to attend X's Review."
HoS: "But it's his Transitional Review and important for you to attend."
EO2: "Oh. I was not aware of that. I will see if I can change my diary. What date is it again?"
HoS: [Gives date].
EO2: "Ah. That could be a problem. Is there any possibility you could set it for another date?"
HoS: "Actually, as it is a Transitional Review, it is your responsibility to organise the Review - and the date I gave you is the date you yourself set."
EO: "Ah. I'd better be there then."

See what fun we are having in the real world? Don't you just wish you were here with us?
Hi Pat and Ray. I think your New Year photos are great. You both look so relaxed. Did you two make a wish when you threw your white flower in the sea?
Your apartment photos are good too, gives us a good idea of what it looks like. Best wishes. Thinking of you both. love Barb xx
